Kids dentistry

Kids dentistry is dental care adapted to children from the first tooth through adolescence, covering cleanings, fluoride and sealants, cavity treatment, and monitoring how the adult teeth and jaw are coming in.

How we make kids' visits go well

Bring your child in by their first birthday or whenever the first tooth appears, whichever comes first. That visit is mostly a look, a count, and a conversation with you, because the point at that age is catching development early and making the chair an ordinary place rather than a place something happens to you. Cavity risk is set long before a child can brush well on their own.

For a nervous child we go slowly and narrate everything before it happens, which is usually enough. We use plain words instead of clinical ones, let them hold the mirror, and stop when they ask us to stop. A visit that ends early but ends calmly is a better outcome than a completed cleaning that makes the next appointment harder.

Both offices see children on Saturday mornings, which spares you pulling them out of school, and we book siblings back to back so one trip covers everyone. Most dental plans cover children's exams, cleanings, x-rays, fluoride, and sealants at or near 100 percent, and we verify what your plan actually pays before the first visit rather than after it.

Who it's a good fit for

  • You want a dental home for kids dentistry where your child feels heard and not rushed
  • You'd rather start early so small issues don't become big ones later
  • Your child is nervous about the dentist and needs a gentle, patient approach
  • You want clear guidance as your child grows, from first teeth through braces age

What to expect

  1. Welcome visit: kid-friendly space and staff who explain things at their level
  2. Exam and cleaning sized to your child's age and comfort
  3. Fluoride or sealants when they're appropriate for cavity prevention
  4. Parent coaching on brushing, diet, and habits that stick at home
  5. Open conversation about what's next and when to come back

Common questions

When should my child first see a dentist?
We recommend scheduling your child's first dental visit by their first birthday or when their first tooth appears. Early visits help us monitor development and provide preventive care.
How can I help my child avoid cavities?
Consistent brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, a balanced diet low in sugar, and regular dental check-ups are key to preventing cavities. At each visit we point out the specific spots being missed and what to change.
What if my child is anxious about dental visits?
Our team specializes in making dental visits positive and stress-free for children. We use gentle techniques, explain procedures in a child-friendly way, and offer various comfort options to ensure a calm experience.
Does insurance cover kids' dental visits?
Most dental plans cover children's preventive care (exams, cleanings, x-rays, fluoride, sealants) at 100% or close to it. Restorative work like fillings is typically covered at the standard rate. We verify benefits before your child's first visit and put what's covered in writing.
Are pediatric dental visits FSA or HSA eligible?
Yes. Your child's exams, cleanings, x-rays, fluoride, sealants, fillings, and any orthodontic care are all eligible expenses under your FSA or HSA account.
Do you offer Saturday appointments for kids?
Yes. Both our Lincoln Park and Schaumburg offices are open Saturday mornings, which works well for families who don't want to pull kids out of school. We often book families back-to-back so siblings can be seen in one visit.
