Clear aligners vs braces vs mail-order kits: what actually works

About 6 min read

If you have been considering straightening your teeth as an adult, you have three main paths: clear aligners (including Invisalign), traditional braces, and mail-order direct-to-consumer kits. They are not equivalent. This guide explains what each one actually does, who fits which option, and what to watch for.

Clear aligners (Invisalign and similar)

Clear aligners are removable trays you change every one to two weeks. They move teeth in small, planned steps. Treatment is designed up front from a 3D scan, with your dentist staging the movements and reviewing progress at office visits.

Strengths

  • Nearly invisible day to day
  • Removable for meals and cleaning
  • Predictable for crowding, spacing, and many bite issues
  • Works well with cosmetic work like whitening or bonding afterward

Trade-offs

  • You have to wear them 20 to 22 hours per day for the plan to work
  • Tooth-colored "attachments" are bonded for grip and are visible up close
  • Complex bite or rotation problems may take longer or require fixed appliances

Traditional braces

Brackets bonded to your teeth, connected by a wire your dentist adjusts at each visit. Metal or clear ceramic. Always working, because you cannot remove them.

Strengths

  • Predictable for severe crowding, bite, and rotation cases
  • No compliance issue. Nothing to forget to wear.
  • Often the right call for growing teens with complex movements

Trade-offs

  • Visible; food sticks; flossing is harder
  • Adjustments can feel sore for a day or two after
  • Some people find them harder to commit to as adults

Direct-to-consumer kits

Mail-order aligner companies skip the in-office exam and rely on photos and home impressions or scans. They are cheaper. They are also riskier, because moving teeth without an in-person exam, X-rays, and ongoing supervision can damage roots, worsen a bite, or move teeth through gum tissue.

We routinely see patients who started with mail-order kits and need orthodontic or periodontal repair afterward. If cost is the concern, ask about staged aligner plans or financing first.

How to choose

Three questions help narrow it down:

  • How complex is your case? Crowding plus rotation plus bite issues may need braces or a hybrid plan.
  • What is your lifestyle? Public-facing job, frequent travel, weddings on the calendar: aligners shine here.
  • How disciplined are you? Aligners only work if you wear them. If you know you'll probably forget to wear aligners, fixed braces may be better.

Our Invisalign and clear aligners page covers in-house options at both offices. Consults are free and include a scan and a written plan with cost before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

How long does aligner treatment take?

Light cases: a few months. Average adult cases: 9 to 15 months. Complex cases can run longer. Your treatment plan estimates the number of trays at the start.

Will aligners change my speech?

For most people, only the first few days, mostly with S and Z sounds. It settles quickly.

What about retainers afterward?

Yes, always. Teeth want to drift back, especially in the first year. We make retainers as part of the plan and review wear schedules with you.

Will insurance cover aligners?

Some PPO plans have an orthodontic benefit; many cosmetic-only cases are not covered. We verify benefits and offer Care Credit and Cherry financing. See our insurance page.

Can I get a consult without committing?

Yes. Visit either office or send a question first. We will tell you whether aligners are realistic for your case before you spend anything.
