Thinking about veneers? A plain-English guide to candidacy and longevity

About 6 min read

Veneers can transform a smile in a way nothing else can match. They can also be the wrong choice for the wrong patient. This guide explains who is a great candidate, what to expect during treatment, and how long well-made veneers actually last.

What veneers actually are

A porcelain veneer is a thin custom shell bonded to the front of a tooth. Veneers change color, shape, and small alignment issues on multiple teeth at once. They are different from crowns (which wrap the whole tooth and are used after big breaks or root canals) and from Bioclear (a composite technique done in one visit).

Who is a good candidate?

  • You like the alignment of your teeth but want them lighter or reshaped
  • You have small chips, gaps, or worn edges across several front teeth
  • You have stable gum health and no untreated cavities or bite issues
  • You are willing to wear a night guard if you grind
  • You are not pregnant and not in the middle of major life changes that would push appointments out

If you have a bigger crowding or bite problem, your dentist may recommend aligners first so the veneers do not have to compensate for the position of the teeth.

What the process looks like

Veneer work is planned before it is delivered. A typical sequence:

  • Photos and digital scans
  • A wax-up or digital mock-up so you see the shape before any tooth is touched
  • Conservative preparation (usually less than a millimeter of enamel)
  • Temporary veneers while the porcelain is made
  • Bonding at the final visit with bite checks

Most cases are two or three appointments over a couple of weeks. Smile-design cases with bigger changes may add a try-in step or cosmetic mock-up worn for a few days.

How long do veneers last?

Well-made porcelain veneers commonly last 10 to 15 years and often longer with good care. Lifespan depends on:

  • Bonding quality and material choice
  • Bite forces and night-time grinding (a custom guard helps)
  • Gum health (recession exposes margins)
  • Diet (ice, hard candies, pen-chewing all shorten life)

Veneers are not "forever." They can be replaced when the time comes, often without significantly more tooth reduction the second time.

Are they reversible?

Once enamel is shaped to fit a veneer, the change is not fully reversible. That is why we plan veneers carefully and only suggest them after lighter options (whitening, bonding, Bioclear) have been considered. Some "no-prep" veneer cases preserve almost all the enamel but are not right for every smile.

At Dental Salon, veneer consults include photos, a scan, and a written plan with cost before any tooth is touched. Read more on our veneers and smile makeovers page.

Frequently asked questions

Do veneers look fake?

When proportions and shade are planned thoughtfully, no. Veneers should look like teeth that already belonged to your face. A good mock-up is the best way to preview that.

How many do most people need?

It depends on your smile line. Some patients do four, others six to eight, others a full set. Your dentist will show you what is visible when you smile and recommend the smallest number that gets you the result.

Do they stain?

Porcelain itself does not stain. The bonded edges and any adjacent natural tooth can pick up color over time, especially with coffee, red wine, and tobacco.

Will insurance cover veneers?

Usually not, since veneers are typically classified as cosmetic. See our insurance page for what is and is not covered, and ask about financing.

How do I get started?

Book a consult at either Lincoln Park or Schaumburg. Bring photos of smiles you like, even if they are not your own. You can also send a question first.
